Abu dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), a part of the Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), is actively participating in the 77th Frankfurt Book Fair from 15th to 19th October 2025. This event is recognized as one of the world's premier cultural and publishing gatherings.

According to Emirates News Agency, the ALC's involvement underscores its mission to elevate the global presence of the Arabic language and establish Abu Dhabi as a cultural and creative hub. The Centre aims to enhance strategic partnerships with international publishing and creative institutions. Dr Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC, emphasized that the participation is a testament to the Centre's dedication to promoting Arab literature on the international stage, highlighting Abu Dhabi's crucial role in translation, publishing, and cultural dialogue. The Fair also offers a platform to discuss global publishing trends and challenges, supporting the UAE's vision of culture as a sustainable development driver.

During the Fair, the ALC will formalize a partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Arabookverse to initiate the Digital Arabic Library project. This project aims to increase the accessibility of Arabic content globally and align with digital advancements in publishing. The signing will be witnessed by Juergen Boos, President and CEO of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

In addition, the ALC will host an official reception for publishers and decision-makers to showcase its cultural initiatives, grants, and programmes that bolster the publishing industry. These initiatives include those highlighted at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

The Centre's cultural programme features a panel discussion on 17th October titled "Comics in the Arab World: From the Margins to the Forefront," featuring German illustrator Katharina Grossmann-Hensel and children's publishing expert Meri Melkonian. The session will address the evolution and challenges of Arabic comics and explore digital platforms as a means to reach a wider audience.

Another significant event, "How Do Emirati and German Youth Read?" will occur on 19th October at the Frankfurt International Stage. This panel will include contributions from Julia Balog, Emirati researcher Moza Jassim, and journalist Saeed Saeed as moderator. The discussion will delve into youth reading habits, the impact of technology, and the role of cultural initiatives in encouraging reading.

The ALC pavilion will further host two sessions for the Sheikh Zayed Book Award. The first session, "The Classics Today: New Horizons in Arabic Literature" on 17th October, will feature scholars like Beatrice Grndler, Hakan Through these initiatives, ALC aims to cultivate partnerships with publishers from diverse regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and enhance collaboration with digital and audio publishing platforms. The Centre is also focused on supporting translation projects and rights exchanges to ensure a sustainable international presence for Arabic literature.

The Frankfurt Book Fair, with the Philippines as this year's Guest of Honour, anticipates over 4,300 exhibitors from 92 countries, providing extensive opportunities for collaboration across the publishing, cinema, and creative industries.
