Crescent Moon for Jumada al-Awwal 1448 AH Set for Astrophotography Detection

Sharjah:The Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub (SSAH), affiliated with the University of Sharjah, has announced its findings on the visibility of the crescent moon for Jumada al-Awwal 1448 AH. The astronomical calculations suggest that the crescent will not be visible to the naked eye or through a telescope after sunset on Sunday, October 11, 2026, which corresponds to 29 Rabi al-Thani.

According to Emirates News Agency, the crescent may be detected using advanced astrophotography techniques before sunset. This is part of SSAH's ongoing efforts to enhance astronomical knowledge and awareness.

Countries that rely on astronomical calculations or informed visual sighting are expected to start Jumada al-Awwal on Monday, October 12, 2026. However, those requiring the crescent to be sighted with the naked eye or through an optical telescope after sunset are anticipated to begin the month on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

SSAH detailed that the moon will reach central conjunction (new moon) at 750 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2026. The topocentric conjunction for Sharjah will occur at 847 pm local time in the United Arab Emirates. The calculations indicate that the age of the topocentric crescent at sunset on Sunday will be approximately 21 hours and 9 minutes. The moon will remain above the horizon for 15 minutes post-sunset, with an altitude of 3 degrees and 6 minutes. Its elongation or angular distance from the sun will be 11 degrees and 32 minutes.
