Abu dhabi: Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), highlighted the necessity of establishing a regular strategic parliamentary dialogue between the United Arab Emirates and the European Parliament. This initiative aims to enhance mutual understanding, expand cooperation, and develop more mature approaches to regional and international issues of common interest.
According to Emirates News Agency, Ghobash addressed the importance of the dialogue during the tenth session between the Federal National Council and the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Arabian Peninsula. The session was attended by Antonella Sberna, Vice-President of the European Parliament, and other delegation members.
Ghobash stated that under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE prioritizes parliamentary dialogue with European partners to deepen political, economic, and security cooperation. Over past decades, the UAE has fostered a balanced partnership with the European Union based on mutual interests and openness to cooperation in energy, technology, investment, and sustainable development.
He emphasized that the UAE’s international relations are guided by principles such as the independence of national decision-making, prioritization of national interests, and openness to diversified partnerships. Ghobash stressed the need for a regular institutional dialogue that addresses regional security, energy security, freedom of navigation, technological cooperation, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.
Regarding regional security, Ghobash linked the stability of the Arabian Gulf region to the global economy and emphasized the need for clarity on Iran’s conduct, urging adherence to international law principles. He warned of threats to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and called for a clear European stance on this issue.
On nuclear security, he affirmed the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant’s compliance with international standards and condemned any attack on peaceful nuclear facilities as a violation of international law.
Addressing international affairs, Ghobash reiterated the UAE’s stance on the war in Ukraine, emphasizing respect for international law and state sovereignty. He also highlighted the UAE’s humanitarian role in facilitating prisoner exchanges.
Regarding Sudan, he stressed the importance of protecting civilians and supporting a political process for a stable civilian state. He also affirmed the UAE’s commitment to the Palestinian cause and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
In conclusion, Ghobash reiterated the UAE’s role as a responsible partner in building serious partnerships with Europe in security, energy, technology, and the economy.
