Almaty: The UAE Jiu-Jitsu National Team, supported by Mubadala Investment Company, made a significant impact on the first day of the 10th Jiu-Jitsu Asian Championship by securing nine medals in the men's competition. The team, competing at Almaty Arena, clinched three gold, five silver, and one bronze medal as the championship progresses until July 19th. According to Emirates News Agency, the adults' competition is the premier level of jiu-jitsu in Asia, offering a valuable opportunity for the UAE to test its mettle against some of the continent's strongest athletes. The UAE entered the event as defending champions, having led the standings at the previous edition in Amman, Jordan, with a roster of some of the country's most seasoned international athletes. Gold medals were awarded to Omar Al-Suwaidi (Under 56kg), Khaled Al-Shehhi (Under 62kg), and Rashid Al-Himany (+94kg). Silver medals were claimed by Rashed Al-Shehhi (Under 56kg), Omar Al-Fadhli (Under 69kg), Mahdi Al-Awlaqi (Under 77kg), Amaar Al-Hosani (Under 94kg), and Hazza Farhan (+94kg), while Saeed Al-Kubaisi earned a bronze in the Under 85kg division. The UAE athletes delivered strong performances across various weight divisions, advancing to decisive rounds against some of Asia's leading competitors. Their efforts placed the UAE in a strong position in the overall standings after the opening day. Fahad Ali Al-Shamsi, Secretary-General of the UAE and Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federations, highlighted the support received from the UAE's leadership, which has fostered athlete development from youth categories to the highest levels of competition. He emphasized the importance of consistent performances and converting opportunities into victories to retain the continental title. Yasser Mohammed Al-Qubaisi, Head of National Teams at the Federation, explained that the coaching staff prepared for the championship based on each athlete's readiness and the demands of various weight divisions. The team focused on controlling the pace of contests, managing scores and t ime, and adapting strategies when necessary. The athletes' performances validated their readiness and ability to execute game plans effectively. Omar Ali Al-Suwaidi, who secured gold in the under-56 kg division, expressed confidence built through preparation and a focus on making strategic decisions during matches. His achievement serves as motivation for future competitions. The opening day's schedule featured men's competitions across all weight divisions, with the 10th Jiu-Jitsu Asian Championship continuing on Saturday with the women's events.
