London:The United Kingdom has unveiled plans to create a national AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) as part of a broader investment strategy aimed at bolstering defenses against emerging biological threats. The announcement was made by Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, who detailed the government's commitment to strengthening bio surveillance and developing medical countermeasures.
According to Wam, the initiative will see an allocation of £165 million, which includes £100 million dedicated to the establishment of the AI Biosecurity Lab. This facility aims to leverage artificial intelligence for the detection and monitoring of biological threats. An additional £65 million will be used to enhance bio surveillance capabilities and develop responses to priority pathogens.
The AI Biosecurity Lab will benefit from significant support from leading AI developers. OpenAI and Anthropic will provide up to £200 million in AI model credits, facilitating the use of their models in the lab's operations. Furthermore, the lab will collaborate with Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research, a London-based AI life sciences company.
Chancellor Healey emphasized the lab's role as a global institution that will assemble top-tier scientific expertise to safeguard against biological threats while positioning the UK as a leader in AI safety and security. He highlighted the importance of the UK maintaining its technological edge to protect against evolving threats, including cyber and biological risks, thereby influencing its future security landscape.
