Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority Enhances Workforce Development with University Collaboration

Abu Dhabi:The Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) recently hosted the fifth edition of the Universities Collaboration Forum on Early Childhood Development (ECD) Workforce at Abu Dhabi University. This event brought together universities and government entities to address workforce needs and enhance academic pathways for careers in early childhood development.

According to Emirates News Agency, the forum is part of ECA's initiatives to expand academic programs and provide professionals with essential knowledge and skills to support young children and families. Over the last three years, participating universities have introduced more than six ECD programs, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, Applied Behaviour Analysis, and early childhood care and education.

At the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), 3,647 students have enrolled in an ECD elective course, exposing students from various academic backgrounds to the significance of early childhood development. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi University offers a Methods of Teaching Early Childhood course as part of its Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, covering diverse aspects of child development. This semester, about 10 teachers from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra are enrolled.

The forum also explored aligning university curricula with ECD professional competencies, expanding practical learning opportunities, and strengthening ties with employers.

ECA is developing an ECD Competencies Platform that will offer professional requirements, learning resources, career pathways, and workforce insights, aiding universities and students in exploring sector opportunities. Discussions also covered strategies to encourage young Emiratis to pursue careers in early childhood development and incorporate expertise in child rights and related legal frameworks.
