Abu Dhabi: Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of World Sickle Cell Day, celebrated annually on 19th June, as a pivotal opportunity to raise awareness about sickle cell disease. The occasion serves not only to support patients and their families but also to highlight efforts aimed at mitigating the health and social impacts of the disease.
According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Al Mannaei remarked that sickle cell disease continues to pose a significant public health challenge globally. It affects patients' quality of life and places a long-term burden on families. She stated that the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi is committed to transforming this reality through innovative solutions, early detection, and personalized care. Their mission is to foster a healthy population by delivering top-tier care and driving continuous resilience and innovation.
Dr. Al Mannaei noted that leveraging powerful Artificial Intelligence tools, alongside data and genomic sciences, the department is developing a system to predict, prevent, and act against sickle cell disease. The department's initiatives start with prevention, where the Premarital Genetic Screening Programme empowers couples to make informed decisions to reduce the prevalence of genetic conditions like sickle cell in future generations.
She further elaborated on their shift from a reactive to a proactive and personalized care approach for sickle cell disease. By utilizing the Emirati Genome Programme and integrating sickle cell disease into the newly launched Newborn Genetic Screening Programme, the department ensures early detection and timely intervention, leading to healthier outcomes for families across the Emirate.
In addition, Dr. Al Mannaei praised the introduction of innovative treatments in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre and global partner Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The department has introduced CASGEVY, a CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing therapy for patients with sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassaemia, marking the first availability of this advanced treatment in the UAE.
She concluded by highlighting that investment in scientific research remains a priority. Through partnerships with the Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an and the Research and Innovation Fund, the department supports research addressing key healthcare priorities. One of the research grants awarded focuses on anaemia and sickle cell disease, examining their impact on healthspan.
