EAD and UAEU Join Forces for Strategic Research to Propel UAE’s Sustainability Goals

Abu dhabi: The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) have formalised a strategic research partnership aimed at advancing the UAE's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The collaboration will initiate a joint research programme to translate scientific findings into actionable policy, furthering national sustainability objectives.

According to Emirates News Agency, the partnership will support up to 10 collaborative research projects focusing on climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, marine ecosystem health, clean water, natural resource management, environmental policy, and the application of digital and nature-based solutions. These projects will be managed by a joint oversight committee responsible for setting priorities, selecting proposals, and monitoring progress to ensure alignment with national environmental priorities and EAD's expertise.

This initiative builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with several universities in the UAE in March 2023, demonstrating a shared commitment to scientific excellence and environmental stewardship. It also adds value to the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network (ADERN), which unites universities, research centres, and institutions to collaborate on scientific research projects that address environmental challenges.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, emphasized the commitment to advancing evidence-based environmental policy through scientific research. She highlighted the role of collaboration between academia and government in creating a platform for innovation that empowers future environmental leaders.

Professor Ahmed Alraeesi, Vice Chancellor of United Arab Emirates University, noted that the partnership reflects UAE University's dedication to environmental sustainability through research and knowledge transfer. The initiative aims to develop impactful solutions to environmental challenges and raise awareness about ecosystem preservation and sustainable development.

UAEU students will actively participate in the programme, gaining mentorship from EAD experts and hands-on experience in applied research. The outcomes will be shared through academic publications, policy briefs, and contributions to national reporting mechanisms such as the UAE SDG Report.

The Letter of Intent signed by EAD and UAEU underscores a shared vision for long-term collaboration that integrates science, policy, and public service, marking a significant step in environmental research and Abu Dhabi's leadership in sustainability.
