Abu dhabi: Etihad Airways and Khalifa University of Science and Technology have successfully completed an eight-week internship programme aimed at providing practical experience in aviation operations to 10 Emirati students. The initiative is part of a broader effort to develop a specialised workforce within the UAE's aviation sector.
According to Emirates News Agency, the students were selected through a competitive, merit-based process and were specialised in fields such as aerospace engineering, computer science, and data analytics. The programme featured a blend of mentorship and project responsibilities, preparing participants for future roles in artificial intelligence, engineering, and advanced operations within the aviation industry.
The internship began with an induction covering Etihad's operations, aviation fundamentals, and safety standards. The interns were then integrated into operational teams, where they contributed to projects in areas including engineering, fleet health monitoring, crew planning, and guest experience. They utilized data analytics and artificial intelligence to tackle business challenges, developing tools to support planning and decision-making and exploring ways to enhance guest journeys.
Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Chief People, Government and Corporate Affairs Officer at Etihad Airways, emphasized the importance of nurturing national talent in shaping the future of aviation in the UAE. She highlighted that partnerships with academic institutions like Khalifa University are crucial in equipping Emirati students with the necessary skills and experience for specialized aviation careers. Dr. Bastaki expressed the airline's anticipation of welcoming many of these students into its workforce.
Captain Majed Al Marzouqi, Chief Operations and Guest Officer at Etihad Airways, underscored the significance of involving students in live projects across critical functions of the airline's operations. He stated that Etihad's growth hinges on professionals who not only grasp the technical demands of aviation but also understand the responsibility of serving guests. The partnership aims to inspire Emirati students to pursue careers in the aviation sector.
Dr. Waleed Alameri, Associate Provost for Student Affairs and Associate Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at Khalifa University, remarked on the value of students discovering their capabilities when provided with the right opportunities, trust, and guidance. He noted that practical placements extend learning beyond the classroom, enabling students to test their abilities, build confidence, and prepare for professional challenges.
This internship programme is a component of Etihad's UAE National Talent Strategy, which seeks to increase Emirati employment across operational, technical, and corporate functions. It also aligns with Khalifa University's mission to prepare graduates for careers through structured pathways from higher education into the aviation industry.
