Brussels:Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis has announced that euro area governments have until Friday, November 6, to nominate candidates to succeed Christine Lagarde as President of the European Central Bank (ECB). This follows Lagarde's announcement of her intention to step down on February 7, 2027, nearly nine months ahead of her term's scheduled conclusion.
According to Wam, a Eurogroup spokesperson confirmed that the Council of the European Union has initiated the appointment procedure following Lagarde's formal letter to European Council President António Costa on October 29, announcing her early departure.
Euro area finance ministers are scheduled to conduct an initial review of nominations at their meeting on Monday, November 9. The appointment process involves the European Council making a final decision based on a recommendation from the Council of the EU, with input from euro area member states and discussions within the Eurogroup.
Leading candidates for the position include Pablo Hernández de Cos, former Governor of the Bank of Spain and current General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements, and Klaas Knot, former President of De Nederlandsche Bank. Both candidates have received support from their respective governments, with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten endorsing their capabilities and experience.
The selection process is set against a backdrop of broader changes to the ECB's Executive Board, as Isabel Schnabel is scheduled to leave on January 3, 2027, and Chief Economist Philip Lane's term ends in May 2027. These overlapping vacancies could lead to negotiations among European governments regarding the appointments, considering geographical and political balances among member states.
