Abu dhabi: H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, recently reviewed Microsoft's plans to invest $15.2 billion in the United Arab Emirates. This significant investment is aimed at accelerating AI innovation and driving digital growth in the region.
According to Emirates News Agency, Microsoft detailed its investment strategy for the UAE, outlining initiatives that will run from 2023 to 2029.
The investment will focus on enhancing the country's AI and cloud infrastructure, expanding digital talent development, and fostering technological collaboration between the UAE and the United States. This initiative is part of Microsoft's long-term strategy to support the UAE's vision for sustainable innovation and digital transformation. H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed was briefed by Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, on future plans, which include expanding AI infrastructure and upskilling local talent through various programs.
Brad Smith emphasized that the investment is a testament to global confidence in the UAE's economic vision and a commitment to contributing to the local economy. Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary-General of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council, highlighted the UAE's establishment as a global center for AI innovation and the strong partnership with the United States in harnessing AI for sustainable growth.
The collaboration with G42, a leading UAE-based AI technology holding company, will further Microsoft's efforts to combine technology, talent, and trust for inclusive economic growth. Peng Xiao, Group CEO of G42, stated that the partnership is focused on execution and impact, aiming to set new standards for cross-border collaboration rooted in trust.
As part of the initiative, Microsoft will expand its AI and cloud data center infrastructure across the UAE and invest heavily in capital expenses, local operations, and advanced technology exports. The company has secured export licenses for advanced GPUs, supporting Azure AI services and local innovation. Microsoft is also committed to building local talent, with plans to skill one million people in the UAE by 2027, in collaboration with government entities and educational institutions.
The partnership is reinforced by the Intergovernmental Assurance Agreement, developed with both the US and UAE governments, ensuring high standards of cybersecurity and responsible AI governance. Microsoft's commitment to responsible development aims to ensure that AI benefits reach all communities, promoting sustainable growth and opportunity across the UAE and beyond.
