Maldives Steps Up Tourism Push in Middle East Markets

Abu dhabi: The Maldives is intensifying its efforts to bolster its tourism presence in the Middle Eastern markets, with a focus on enhancing air connectivity with GCC countries, developing halal tourism, and fostering new investment opportunities. Abdulla Yasir, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), emphasized the significance of the Middle East as a strategic market during the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2026 held in Dubai. He highlighted the region's dual role as a source of visitors and a major transit hub connecting international travelers to the island nation.

According to Emirates News Agency, Yasir acknowledged that 2026 had presented challenges for the Maldives, influenced by developments in the Middle East that affected visitor arrivals. In response, Visit Maldives is shifting its focus to two primary traveler segments: those originating from Middle Eastern markets and international travelers using the region as a transit point en route to the Maldives.

Yasir noted that the Maldives' participation in ATM 2026 marked its largest representation at the event to date, with a delegation comprising 165 representatives from 74 Maldivian tourism companies. This initiative aims to promote the destination and strengthen connections with tourism stakeholders throughout the Middle East.

Efforts are underway to incorporate halal tourism into the Maldives' broader tourism strategy, exploring options to develop offerings tailored to this market's needs. Additionally, Yasir mentioned ongoing discussions with regional airlines to expand and strengthen air connectivity while evaluating opportunities for new routes.
