Abu dhabi: The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) organised the eleventh edition of the "Knowledge Lab," a series of seminars aimed at raising awareness and educating the Institution's employees on various topics related to human rights. The seminar focused on the significance of mental health as a fundamental right and its impact on daily life.
According to Emirates News Agency, the lecture was delivered by Maqsoud Kruse, Chairman of the NHRI, under the title 'The Right to Mental Health: Basic Concepts'. Kruse emphasized the importance of recognizing the right to mental health as an essential component of the highest level of health, as stipulated in International Human Rights conventions. He highlighted that mental health should be viewed as a right, not a privilege, and discussed the Institution's role in safeguarding this right.
The lecture addressed several key topics, including the rights-based approach to mental health, which involves the principles of availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality. Additionally, the session highlighted the launch of the first legislative lab session held at the NHRI headquarters on 22nd May 2025, which focused on the Mental Health Law of 2023.
Kruse also discussed the World Mental Health Day 2025 campaign, themed "Mental Health in Humanitarian Crises," and reviewed significant international agreements, global initiatives, and UN reports related to mental health rights, particularly those from the United Nations and the World Health Organisation.
The session ended with active participation from the Institution's staff, who engaged in discussions, asked questions, and exchanged views on legal matters. The National Human Rights Institution reiterated its commitment to organising educational events that enhance awareness and promote a culture of human rights.
