TRENDS Global Session Explores AI’s Impact on International Cooperation

Abu Dhabi:TRENDS Global, a division of TRENDS Group, recently participated in the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The event, held in Abu Dhabi, featured a high-level panel titled "AI and the Future of International Cooperation Law, Innovation and Emerging Challenges."

According to Emirates News Agency, the session was organized by TRENDS in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and was moderated by Latifa Al Jneibi, a researcher at TRENDS. It focused on legal and technological challenges arising from the rapid advancement of AI, its effects on international cooperation, and criminal justice systems, along with strategies to address emerging transnational crimes.

Key discussions included the development of legislation and policies to keep pace with technological advances. Participants also examined ways to strengthen justice and law enforcement systems while maintaining a balance between smart technology use and the protection of rights and freedoms, ensuring human accountability remains clear.

Amira Al Wahshi from the UAE Federal Public Prosecution presented a vision for integrating innovation and strategic foresight into the justice system. She introduced the Future Prosecution 2045 initiative and the AI-powered Assistant Agents system, which supports rather than replaces public prosecution members.

Dr. Rawan Al Louzi from Abu Dhabi University highlighted the need to update legal frameworks to match AI developments. She emphasized the distinction between everyday AI applications and high-risk uses that could affect judicial decisions, underscoring the importance of the 'human-in-the-loop' principle.

Dr. Ebrahim Al Zaabi of the UAE Government's Executive Office for Anti-Money Laundering stressed using smart technologies to mitigate financial risks and enhance efforts against money laundering and terrorism financing. He advocated for predictive analytics tools and greater international cooperation to combat financial crime.

Noor Saif Al Mazrouei of TRENDS Research and Advisory highlighted research's role in supporting international cooperation and future capabilities. She emphasized the significance of TRENDS' knowledge partnerships, including a White Paper on ethical AI practices.

The session underscored the importance of partnerships among governments, academic institutions, think tanks, and research centers in creating flexible legal frameworks for AI use and addressing future transnational challenges. Participants also called for ongoing international dialogue on AI's ethical and legal standards in justice and law enforcement.
