Sharjah: The TRENDS Youth Council recently hosted a panel discussion titled "Generation without Borders: How Globalisation is Creating New Versions of Ourselves in the Era of Global Reading," at the First Forum Hall, Expo Centre Sharjah. This event was moderated by Rashid Al Hosani, a researcher and council member, and featured a diverse group of young creatives and youth council representatives. It was part of the TRENDS Research and Advisory programme, which partners with the Sharjah International Book Fair 2025.
According to Emirates News Agency, Abdullah Abdulrahman Al-Khaja, a TRENDS Youth Council member, noted the ongoing shift from traditional books to digital platforms, audio, and podcasts. This digital transformation is altering content engagement, with many individuals now preferring quick, dynamic material shared via social media.
Dr. Faisal Al Suwaidi, an Emirati writer and traveller, discussed the interconnected nature of the globalised world, where cultures converge and values are exchanged. He highlighted that Emirati youth are benefiting from globalisation by engaging globally while maintaining their identity and values. He pointed out that when they travel, they carry the essence of their homeland, showcasing its morals, culture, and spirit of tolerance.
Yaqoub Al Balushi from the Sharjah Youth Council elaborated on how globalisation influences not just economic and cultural aspects but also personal identities. In a world where languages and cultures merge, reading acts as a bridge between different regions and ideas, playing a transformative role in shaping perspectives.
Majid Al Hassani of the Shorooq Youth Council emphasized that globalisation enables young people to redefine themselves. He explained that it reshapes lifestyles and modes of interaction, especially for a generation accustomed to a constant influx of information, often experiencing the world through digital screens before real-life encounters.
