Dubai: Mark Ring, Group Director of Middle East Energy, emphasized the transformative impact of artificial intelligence and data centers on global energy demand, steering the sector towards flexible generation, storage, critical power, and smart energy management. This evolution is increasingly vital as economies worldwide grow more dependent on electricity.
According to Emirates News Agency, Ring highlighted the UAE's pivotal role in the global energy sector's progression during the 50th edition of the Middle East Energy exhibition. He commended the collaboration between Middle East Energy and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, which has been instrumental in advancing the energy agenda. The event attracted over 30,000 energy professionals, underscoring Dubai's capacity as a global travel hub with exceptional infrastructure supporting the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions industry.
Ring announced the exhibition's relocation to the Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City Dubai in 2027. He anticipates this move will enhance the exhibition's impact as the energy sector continues to evolve, with the UAE's emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and energy security playing a crucial role. This year's exhibition underscored a shift in the energy sector's priorities, with an increasing focus on technologies needed to develop a resilient and adaptable system, including renewables, storage, electricity transmission, reliable backup power, and smart energy management.
He noted significant interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency products, as well as in switchgear, transformers, and electricity transmission products designed to meet rising demand. He also mentioned PVFarm's Innovation Award for its pre-construction intelligence software for solar-plus-storage projects, illustrating the importance of long-term planning in energy project decision-making.
Ring pointed out that AI and data centers have become major new sources of energy demand. Rystad, Middle East Energy's Intelligence Partner, predicts electricity demand in the Middle East and North Africa will surge from 1,671 terawatt-hours in 2025 to 3,670 terawatt-hours by 2050. Data centers, along with hydrogen, industry, and transport, are expected to drive this consumption growth. The exhibition's Powering AI track highlighted the sector's focus on flexible generation, energy storage, critical power, and smart energy management solutions.
He remarked that the energy transition in the region is advancing from ambition to implementation, citing the Global Energy and Efficiency roundtable hosted under the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure's patronage. The roundtable gathered 30 global companies, with plans to sign a memorandum of understanding to advance implementation mechanisms.
Ring emphasized the exhibition's role in transitioning from discussion to tangible action, demonstrated by new technologies and models aimed at maximizing power production value. He referenced a showcased solution that combines solar power and storage while using surplus energy for cryptocurrency mining as indicative of potential future trends in the energy economy. He concluded by noting that energy storage, grid modernization, and digitalization are among the sector's most significant trends, with the UAE's large-scale solar projects and battery storage systems serving as a model for expanding renewable energy sources while ensuring grid stability.
