Abu Dhabi:The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has successfully completed the first phase of the Environmental Centennial 2071, achieving an impressive 122% implementation rate. This phase, conducted between 2023 and 2025, involved the coordinated efforts of nine government entities that delivered 751 achievements through 98 programs, forwarding the emirate's environmental vision for future generations.
According to Wam, the Environmental Centennial 2071, rooted in the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and aligned with the UAE Centennial 2071, was adopted in 2022 as a unified framework for government action. It aims to link environmental objectives with implementation plans and programs, thereby enhancing the emirate's capability to address emerging challenges.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of safeguarding natural wealth for future generations and highlighted the role of the Environmental Centennial 2071 in fostering a shared commitment to environmental protection across government. She noted that Phase One demonstrated the ability to maintain a clear direction while adapting to changes, and expressed optimism for continued progress in future phases.
The first phase's achievements include the restoration of five square kilometers of coral reefs, a 50% increase in fish biomass in restored areas, and significant advancements in water resilience through recycled water usage and emergency reserves. Clean energy sources now account for 42% of electricity generation, and emissions from electricity generation have decreased by 23% since 2016. Additionally, efforts to improve agricultural practices and promote sustainable mobility were made.
Throughout Phase One, 27 new policies, strategies, standards, and regulatory mechanisms were developed, integrating environmental priorities into government decisions. Public confidence in reducing single-use plastics reached 95%, and 96% of community members adopted practices to minimize their use. Marine research capabilities were also enhanced with the introduction of the research vessel Jaywun and the establishment of the Maritime Sustainability Research Centre.
The framework will undergo a review in 2027, with considerations for broader private sector participation, increased use of artificial intelligence, real-time data analysis, and continued collaboration across Abu Dhabi's environmental ecosystem. Through these efforts, Abu Dhabi aims to embed science-based planning and collaboration in government action, ensuring sustainable benefits for future generations.
