European Parliament Blocks AI on Lawmakers’ Devices, Citing Security Risks

Brussels: The European Parliament has reportedly blocked lawmakers from using the baked-in AI tools on their work devices, citing cybersecurity and privacy risks with uploading confidential correspondence to the cloud.

According to Emirates News Agency, the parliament's IT department communicated via email that it could not guarantee the security of the data uploaded to the servers of AI companies. The email highlighted that the full extent of what information is shared with these AI companies is 'still being assessed.'

As such, the email stated, 'It is considered safer to keep such features disabled.' This move is part of a broader effort to protect sensitive information and ensure the security of the communication among lawmakers.

The ban specifically covers AI tools from companies such as Anthropic's Claude, Microsoft's Copilot, and OpenAI's ChatGPT. These tools are increasingly popular for their ability to assist with various tasks, but the potential risks associated with their use on official devices have prompted this precautionary measure.
