Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued an Emiri Decree establishing the 'Al Qalqali Marine Reserve' in Khorfakkan, Sharjah. The decree outlines the creation of a natural marine reserve, with its geographical boundaries detailed in the aerial map and plan attached to the decree.
According to Emirates News Agency, the decree enforces strict prohibitions in line with Articles 64, 65, 66, and 67 of Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 on the Protection and Development of the Environment. Activities that could harm the ecosystem, wildlife, or marine life, or affect the reserve's aesthetic value, are not allowed. Specifically, actions such as hunting, transporting, or harming marine organisms, introducing non-native species, and polluting the environment are prohibited. Recreational and commercial activities within the reserve require permits from the competent authority.
The decree further mandates the protection of all living organisms within the reserve, including birds and other creatures that use it as a habitat. Activities surrounding the reserve that might affect its environment are also restricted, except with appropriate permits. Violations of the provisions will lead to penalties under Federal Law No. 24 of 1999, and violators will be held responsible for compensations and damage removal costs.
The competent authority is tasked with managing the reserve, coordinating with the Municipal Council, and working with the Sharjah Police to monitor legal compliance. The head of the competent authority is authorized to issue necessary administrative decisions for effective management of the reserve.
