London: The United Arab Emirates has participated in the 34th session of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Assembly, held at the organisation's headquarters in London. Eng Hessa Al Malek, Advisor to the Minister for Maritime Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, led the UAE delegation in discussions addressing the future of the global maritime sector amid evolving environmental and technological landscapes.
According to Emirates News Agency, Al Malek highlighted the challenges and opportunities presented by the maritime sector's shift towards digitalisation and automation. She emphasized the IMO's role in integrating new technologies into its regulatory framework, including the development of the Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships Code and the mandatory requirement of electronic data exchange within the maritime single window.
Al Malek commended the IMO's initiative to develop a strategy on maritime digitalisation to foster innovation, resilience, efficiency, and growth. This involves collaboration between governments and industry stakeholders to navigate the transition effectively.
In terms of decarbonisation, Al Malek noted significant progress since the adoption of the revised 2023 IMO Strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships. This milestone aligns with the UAE's commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050, highlighting the importance of decarbonising the maritime sector while maintaining global trade flows and economic growth.
Al Malek also addressed the critical role of the human element in the shipping industry, emphasizing the need for workforce preparedness in the face of rapid changes. She stressed the importance of fair treatment, inclusivity, equality, and diversity, as well as empowering women and supporting gender equality in the maritime sector.
She further explained that the effective implementation of IMO initiatives is crucial for their success. With nearly 60 years of experience and over 50 international treaties, Member States must understand international law requirements to ensure consistent enforcement.
Al Malek concluded by reaffirming the UAE's commitment to international partnership and building a resilient and sustainable maritime ecosystem. She emphasized the UAE's support for the IMO's efforts to protect the marine environment, enhance navigation safety and security, and strengthen countries' capabilities for a prosperous maritime future.
