Zayed International Foundation for Environment Advocates Unified Efforts Against Plastic Pollution

Dubai: The Zayed International Foundation for Environment has reiterated its dedication to initiating impactful measures against the escalating issue of plastic waste pollution, a global challenge adversely affecting the environment and public health.

According to Emirates News Agency, the prevalence of plastic waste and microplastics in marine environments, along with their presence in living organisms, poses a threat to biodiversity and human health due to the ingestion of products tainted with microplastics and nanoplastics. Dr. Mohamed Ahmed bin Fahd, Chairman of the Zayed International Foundation for Environment, highlighted these concerns during Arab Environment Day, celebrated annually on October 14. He emphasized that the day is pivotal in raising environmental awareness and engaging all societal sectors in environmental protection.

Dr. bin Fahd remarked that commemorating Arab Environment Day aligns with a common objective of achieving a safe and sustainable environment, reinforcing the collective responsibility to shield the Earth from looming threats. He underscored that the increasing production and consumption of plastics, notably single-use plastics, demand decisive measures and innovative strategies to mitigate their negative implications. He stressed that addressing plastic pollution is a joint responsibility requiring concerted efforts from governments, international bodies, the private sector, civil society, and individuals.

Dr. bin Fahd called for robust awareness campaigns aimed at altering consumption habits and embracing sustainable living practices that minimize reliance on single-use plastics, curtail other plastic usage, and encourage recycling and reuse. He also advocated for industries to incorporate environmentally friendly materials and clean technologies.

He highlighted the necessity of establishing a global accord to phase out non-biodegradable plastics production and implement stringent policies to curtail their production and use, while also backing initiatives for responsible waste management. Dr. bin Fahd affirmed that innovation is pivotal for devising sustainable solutions to plastic pollution, noting that supporting research and development in manufacturing and recycling, and investing in advanced technologies, can lessen the environmental impact of plastic and foster the circular economy and green job creation.

He concluded by asserting that environmental protection is a moral, national, and humanitarian duty, and tackling the plastic pollution challenge demands collective action from all societal segments, alongside enhanced education and environmental awareness. He expressed optimism for a cleaner, more sustainable planet and a healthier, safer environment for both current and future generations.
