Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened the regional headquarters of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ICESCO) in University City, Sharjah. The inauguration ceremony took place on Thursday morning, with the Ruler of Sharjah accompanied by H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.
According to Emirates News Agency, the Ruler of Sharjah unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the formal opening of the building, which was constructed under his directives. The new headquarters aims to provide ICESCO with the necessary facilities to carry out its mission, encompassing educational, scientific, and cultural activities, along with offering technical, scientific, and practical services to its member states. Sharjah was chosen as the location for this headquarters due to its esteemed cultural reputation, presence of prominent institutions, and strategic geographic position.
The ceremony commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by a welcoming address from Salem Omar Salem, the Regional Director of ICESCO in Sharjah. He expressed gratitude for the Ruler's patronage, highlighting the importance of investing in people and viewing culture as a responsibility. Salem emphasized the role of the new center as a cultural beacon, aimed at inspiring creativity and fostering thought.
During his address, Dr Salim bin Mohammed Al Malik, Director-General of ICESCO, praised the Emirate of Sharjah and its Ruler for their support of cultural and scientific institutions. He announced the awarding of the title "Guardian of Knowledge" to the Ruler of Sharjah, recognizing his commitment to promoting knowledge and supporting innovators. Dr Al Malik also noted Sharjah's role in enhancing culture on both regional and international levels.
The Ruler of Sharjah was presented with videos detailing the construction phases of the project and ICESCO's mission. These highlighted ICESCO's commitment to preserving Islamic cultural heritage and fostering cooperation among Islamic nations. The ceremony concluded with the Ruler honoring partners and supporters with commemorative shields and receiving a distinguished gift from ICESCO.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sheikh Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, and numerous senior officials and representatives from ICESCO member states.
